Dear Co-Laborer,

For the past 57 years, The Greater Birmingham Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast Collaborative has enjoyed community partnership in support of Birmingham’s annual Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast. On May 5, 2022, The Honorable Mayor Randall Woodfin is serving as the host Mayor in Birmingham, the host city for this regional breakfast. We invite you to participate in this meaningful aspect of Birmingham’s Spiritual Legacy, an occasion that brought about a major turning point in the Civil Rights movement.

In the aftermath of the 1963 Birmingham Campaign, the faith community, spearheaded by Reverend Billy Graham, held Birmingham’s first integrated event at Legion Field on Easter Sunday 1964. Local businessmen quickly responded with the first Prayer Breakfast as Mayor Albert Boutwell ushered in a new form of city government. It has been said of Graham’s visit to Birmingham that it “took a great deal of courage and was needed very badly”.

Over the years, this event expanded to include all mayors in Jefferson and Shelby County municipalities and uniquely joins families and communities as well. In a climate with heightened ethnic and social tensions, it is imperative that we resist a tendency towards homogeneous silos.  We must act counter-culturally, keeping the faith and a Christ-like commitment to unity and reasoning together.  Our time in prayer together is essential for Birmingham, now more than ever. It is critical that we intentionally foster theocratic and democratic ideals in our public sphere, so those ideals become the standard for every Birmingham citizen.

The call for strong communities is paramount to healthy economic growth and the enduring goal of vibrant fellowship and courageous collaboration.

Collective prayer and vision-casting are central to progress in Greater Birmingham’s family, corporate and political sectors. Let’s venture beyond barriers that traditionally seek to separate us and choose instead to live bravely together.

Thank you for your contribution to the Body of Christ. Together we embrace the task of investing in future generations of righteous leaders. We use this platform to affirm men and women that lead municipalities in our metro area, challenging them to lead with integrity and demonstrate utter dependence on our Lord. Please prayerfully consider lending your support to this worthwhile effort. Feel free to contact us via email at team@praybirmingham.org.

Best personal regards,
2022 Prayer Breakfast Collaborative
